Middletown Rain Barrel Workshop

  • 9 Berkeley Avenue Middletown, RI, 02842 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

UPDATE: THIS EVENT WAS POSTPONED TO SUNDAY, APRIL 21 DUE TO THE RAIN. SAME TIMES AND PLACE. Please contact Sara at schurgin.ericd@gmail.com for refunds or alternative arrangements if you cannot attend.

This event is being hosted in partnership with the Middletown Tree Commission and Aquidneck Earth Week. A native tree seedling giveaway will be open to all participants courtesy of the Middletown Tree Commission.

Learn how to prep a rain barrel, with all the materials and step by step guidance provided within the workshop. At the end of the workshop you will be taking home a ready-to-install rain barrel and installation kit, which will collect and store stormwater for your garden.

The cost of this workshop is $55 which includes attending the workshop, the rain barrel materials and installation kit which you will take home to install yourself after the workshop.

Please pay attention to the arrival time of your ticket as each workshop is split into three arrival windows so that our volunteers have the capacity to set you up with your materials. Containers generously provided by Coca-Cola. Made possible with support from the River Network.

For conservation and pollution prevention, installing a rain barrel to collect and store rainwater for use on your lawn and gardens is a simple but powerful way to make a difference for Narragansett Bay.

Lawn and garden watering typically makes up 40% of total summer household water usage, according to the EPA. Plus, the biggest threat to our waters today is polluted runoff water that runs off our roofs and into our streets and alleys, carrying all the oil, sediment and other contaminants that it picks up along the way into our lakes, rivers and streams.

The Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District (ERICD) is a non-profit, quasi-public organization that functions as a facilitator for meeting the needs of the local land user in the conservation of soil, water and other related natural resources.

The make-up Rain-Date for this workshop is Sunday, April 21. You will be notified via the email that you sign up with whether the workshop is postponed due to the weather!

Please contact Natalie at nducharmebarth.ericd@gmail.com with any questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing you there!

Financial and Technical Assistance- Information Session

Calling all farmers and landowners!

Do you own or manage farmland or forest land in Rhode Island? Could you use some technical and financial help in managing those lands more effectively? Join us for an information session to discover how you can work together with the Eastern RI Conservation District (ERICD) to install environmentally-smart practices on your land.

Through our partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), we can provide you with financial and technical assistance to address natural resource concerns through an array of conservation practices.

This is an in-person event and there is no virtual option for this meeting. However, if you are not able to attend in person, please reach out to us to schedule a one-to-one meeting or phone call where we can answer your questions and provide you with further information. For questions contact Natalie at nducharmebarth.ericd@gmail.com.

We offer funding and support through a range of conservation programs, including:

• EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) - NRCS’ flagship conservation program that helps farmers, ranchers and forest landowners integrate conservation into working lands.

• EQIP IRA (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) – Helps farmers, ranchers, forestland owners, and Tribes with the application of conservation measures that focus on carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, reduced energy, and soil health.

• CSP (Conservation Stewardship Program) – Helps landowners build on existing conservation efforts while strengthening operations.

• AMA (Agricultural Management Assistance) – Helps agricultural producers manage financial risk through diversification, marketing, or natural resource conservation practices.

• ACEP (Agricultural Conservation Easement Program) – Helps landowners, land trusts, and other entities protect, restore, and enhance wetlands or protect working farms and ranches through conservation easements.

The next round of funding for these programs has an application deadline of March 15. Join us for more information on the different programs, your eligibility, and in-person application help.

About Slate Hill Cattle Company at Cloverbud Ranch:

We have been raising the finest 100% grass-fed beef and free-ranged heritage pork locally, naturally, humanely, and sustainably since 2011. We care deeply about our animals and provide them with a long stress-free life, rotationally grazing on 100 acres of lush coastal pasture at our Cloverbud Ranch property on Aquidneck Island. Our traditional artisanal methods represent less than 2% of America’s beef production. We require a large amount of space and a long time to grow out our cattle to a high culinary standard. In fact, twice as long as commodity feedlot beef which has been scaled to industrial production levels by depending on grain ration which fattens them quickly. We have transitioned from many years as a stocker / feeder operation to a cow-calf breeding program with our own Austrian Pinzgauers, a rare and historic Alpine heritage breed that has only been in North America since 1975. The Pinzgauers were selectively bred over centuries for hardiness, mothering, easy birthing, abundant, rich milk and calm, gentle demeanor. They are medium-framed animals, sized perfectly for pasture performance and fattening on grass. They help us fulfill our value proposition to our customers providing tasty, heathy, local beef raised in regenerative method."

White Rock Farm Tour (Rescheduled from 10/21)

Join us for a tour of White Rock Farm! During the tour we will hear about the history of the farm and the conservation practices they utilize to help the environment. White Rock Farm partners with ERICD and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to follow smart-environmental practices, including Bedded Pack Systems and Cattle Management.

This tour is great for families to explore a working farm, farmers who are interested in installing environmentally-smart practices, and community members who are interested in sustainable agriculture!

This event is FREE - please RSVP through Eventbrite by clicking the button below.

For questions please contact Sarah Wilkinson at swilkinson.ericd@gmail.com

About White Rock Farm:

Our farm, White Rock Farm, is located in the picturesque town of Little Compton, RI along the Sakonnet River. It’s been in the family for 5 generations, with the 7th generation now growing up on the farm.

Originally, the farm was a dairy farm until the late 1990s. In 2014, after many years of being away, Nelson “Rusty” Cabot and his wife, Erin, moved back to Little Compton to run a beef farm.

Today, we raise our own animals from birth. They are 100% pasture raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished. We utilize rotational grazing to make the most of natural methods to optimize the health of the animals and the pastures. We also grow, harvest and bale our own hay, so we can be assured of the quality being fed to the cattle during the cold season when grass is not available. They also happen to have the most wonderful view in the entire town.

We believe in raising our animals humanely. We start handling them from birth to lower stress. We have a vet available should the animals need them.

Our goal is to produce the best quality of grass-fed, grass-finished beef that has been humanely raised. We are already teaching the 7th generation what we know and are hoping that they will want to continue raising cattle.

Tour of Sowams Meadow Preserve

*Registration for this event is closed but there is room available for walk ups. Please join us and contact swilkinson.ericd@gmail.com with any questions!*

Sowman Meadow Preserve is a 26 acre wetland habitat along the Palmer River in Warren, RI and has been undergoing a restoration project over the last few years. Come see the work that has been done to restore this coastal buffer.

All are welcome to this free, kid friendly tour to learn about the ecology of our region and the role coastal buffers play in our environment. We ask you to please RSVP through this Eventbrite page, but welcome you to come if you did not register.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is partnering with the Warren Land Conservation Trust, Save the Bay, and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management's (RIDEM) Mosquito Abatement Program to restore salt marshes, freshwater wetlands and coastal buffers on the eastern side of the Palmer River in Warren, RI - including Sowam Meadow Preserve.

Restoration activities are taking place on abandoned agricultural fields, a freshwater/ brackish wetland adjacent to the marsh, upland buffer, and salt marsh. Through the project, partners are mowing brush, clearing invasive plants, removing dead trees, seeding pollinator plants and planting native trees.

When the Massasoit Ousamequin (Yellow Feather) of the Pokanoket Nation first met the Pilgrims in what is now Plymouth, MA in 1621, he was living forty miles to the southwest in an area known as Sowams. While Massasoit presided over a network of tribes extending from just south of present-day Boston to Bristol, RI and from the Atlantic coast to present day Providence, RI., the area he chose for his home was along the Providence, Runnins, Ten-Mile, Barrington, Warren, Kickemuit, Palmer and Coles Rivers.

Tour of Long Lane Farm

Join us for a tour of Long Lane Farm in Warren, RI! During the tour we will hear about the history of the farm, what they produce, and the conservation practices they have on the farm to help the environment. Long Lane Farm partners with ERICD and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to follow smart-environmental practices.

This event is FREE - please RSVP through Eventbrite.

For questions please contact Nate Lukas at nlukas.ericd@gmail.com

More about the farm:

Camille and Devin were first a married couple before they became a farming team. Camille started farming in 2013 at Little River Farm, which she managed until 2022. After years of supporting Camille in her farming dream, Devin decided to quit her office job and become a farmer in 2021 after they acquired their dream property and farm house in Warren in 2020.

Long Lane Farm was started in 2023 with the goal to create a farm that can support a family and provide abundant produce to the surrounding community. Instead of driving our produce all over the state, our goal is to have our CSA members and customers come to our farm to pick up their shares, shop at our farm stand and attend our annual spring plant sale.

We want our farm to be a welcoming gathering place for our neighbors and customers. Long Lane farm has three high tunnels which we grow in year- round and a nursery where we grow our increasingly popular micro greens. All of our products are grown using organic and no-till practices. These practices and our attention to detail produce a high quality, delicious, and nutritious product. Our vegetables are harvested the day before the customer receives them so that they are extra fresh and have a long shelf life. You will taste the difference.
